What to look for when collecting the Flora Danica flatware.
1) The "tool" on the flatware needs to be original. As the value of the piece is otherwise a fraction of the original Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica flatware.
The handles for the Flora Danica flatware were also sold separately, so a person could purchase the handles and then have a silver/goldsmith put on a less expensive "tool".
For the "tool" to be original it needs to have the Anton Michelsen mark and have the Sterling silver mark. On some of the more recent flatware it will be the Georg Jensen mark, as Georg Jensen took over Anton Michelsen.
On the non original Flatware you will find all kinds of different silver marks, depending on what silversmith was used.
The flatware whether the knives in stainless or the other flatware in sterling silver needs to be gilded. The flatware was not made in a non gilded version. So items without gilding will need to be re-gilded to appear in original shape.
It's difficult to see if the knives are original. As Royal Copenhagen used Raadvad blades, which are very common in flatware in Denmark, so non original knives can have those blades too. But on original knives there will be a silver mark on the sterling silver band where the porcelain and the stainless blade is connected.
Another way to determine if the knives are original is to look at the size of the blades. They were only made in one size.
2) One thing to look out for on Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica flatware is for cracks in the porcelain. The flatware is a composite of two materials: Porcelain/Sterling Silver or Stainless Steel, the materials do not work together. So one will often find cracks in the porcelain, as the metal expands in heat. So you should NEVER wash your flatware in hot water and you should NEVER leave your flatware out in a cabinet, that has direct sunlight or in a room that is not climate controllled.
These above recommendations will help you get a fair price in your purchase and collecting of Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica flatware. Should you have other questions, that are not answered here, then please e-mail us.
